The overall progress of a country depends on how much it is developed in science and technology. The scenario of Bangladesh in such case is not optimistic. It is therefore important to know the backdrop of the current situations. This study aims to know the level of understanding of the students in physics, reasons of current level of performance and suggestions for further improvement. This study is mixed in nature as it is demanded both quantitative and qualitative data. Data is collected from144 randomly selected undergraduate students‟ using both closed ended and open ended questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings of this study reveal that students‟ understanding level of basic Physics hardly meet up the satisfactory standard in recent years, which might lead to a very dangerous consequence for the future of the country. As the country is planning to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by United Nation (UN) by 2030, it is high time to overhaul the Physics teaching techniques and national policies for appointing the science teachers in Bangladesh. The findings of this study might be significant use for the stakeholders, policy makers, education researchers and Physicists of the country.en_US
