Title: Cities in Crisis: Exploring Discontents and Challenges of Unplanned Urban Growth in Bangladesh
Authors: Biswas, Buddha Dev; Matin, Shaira
Abstract: Urbanization has accelerated rapidly over the past few decades in all divisional
cities of Bangladesh. This paper closely examines the nature and extent of urbanization in
Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka and Chittagong the two mega cities of the country. It
provides a historical analysis of migration patterns, changes in population structure, and the
pressure on infrastructure, health facilities, education, electricity supply, safe drinking water
in urban centres, with a special focus on the expanding slum sector. Qualitative data analysis
on the scale of migration is used to model the stakes in social systems and urban architecture.
A primary analysis of infrastructure deficits in transportation, housing, and public services
assesses the system’s limited capacity to meet current urban demands. To gauge the depth of
urban discontent, sanitation, lighting, and access to food, water, and clothing in slum areas
are also examined. Inspired by Ananya Roy’s work, the study uses subaltern urbanism to
highlight informal settlements not as urban failures rather as an alternative urban
development through innovation, resistance and alternative forms of urban modernity.
Finally, policy debates and urban planning prescriptions are presented to address these
challenges, aiming to enhance Bangladesh's future urban development by reducing
vulnerability and promoting inclusive growth. This paper contributes to the literature on
sustainable urban development in rapidly developing regions.

Title: Reeling in Hope: Can Fishery Credit Really Improve Food Expenditure Status for Poor Fish Farming Communities in Rural Bangladesh?
Authors: Syed, Robayet Ferdous; Mahmud, Kazi Tanvir; Hossain, Jinat; Matin, Shaira
Abstract: he fish farming communities in Bangladesh often find themselves trapped in poverty due to limited resources and low living standards. Many of these communities face financial constraints, struggling to secure credit from formal financial institutions. This compels them toturn to informal lending sources with unfavorable terms and conditions. To address this challenge, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have taken the initiative to provide credit facilities to these fish farming communities. In this study, we employed the Simple Random Sampling (SRS) technique to select 385 fish farmers from the Khulna district who had received credit support from NGOs. The Propensity Score Matching (PSM) technique was then applied to evaluate the impact of fishery credit on the household food expenditure of the sampled fish farmers. Contrary to existing literature suggesting that access to fisheries credit improves food security, our empirical findings present a different perspective. The Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) study identifiedtwo factors influencing the food purchasing capacity of fish farmers: the value of non-land assets and the proximity of NGOs' branch offices to the fish farmers' dwellings. To enhance the food security status of underprivileged fish farming communities, it is recommended to focus on transferring assets and establishing NGO offices in close proximity to villages. These measures can significantly contribute to improving the food expenditure capacity of these communities.

Title: Self-employment: Prospects and Challenges
Authors: Shabnam, Sharmin; Matin, Shaira; Islam, Tazul
Abstract: The unemployment problem in Bangladesh is getting more complicated. Around one-sixth of the total population is unemployed, and 1.8 million youths enter into the job market every year. In this backdrop, Bangladesh will have to create 2.1 million jobs every year which is a daunting task for the Government. under these circumstances, self-employment is considered to be the quickest and easiest way to create employment. This article explores the role of self- employment in economic development. It compares the data on the socio-economic background of the non-farm self-employed in various places of Dhaka city. It also gives an insight into the challenges of self-employment, and training and the support required by the self- employed. The findings are important for policy implications to overcome the challenges "by providing possible support to the serf-employed so that more people are encouraged to create their own jobs rather than waiting for someone else to give them a wage employment.
