Abstract: 5-(1,3-Diaryl-1-oxopropyl)pyrimidine(1H,3H,5H)-2,4,6-triones 3a-f were synthesized in moderate to good yields by the reactions of 1,3-diaryl-2-propene-1-ones 2a-f with barbituric acid 1 in 1:1 molar ratio under refluxing condition in 50% aqueous ethanol medium without using any catalyst. The structures of the compounds 3a-f were elucidated on the basis of their UV, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral data and elemental analyses.
